The Iranian government intends to enact a new set of laws that will toughen penalties for illegal mining.
The new legislation includes imprisonment, license revocations and increased fines.
The ministry said the abuse of subsidized electricity to mine cryptocurrencies degrades the quality of power on the national grid and destroys electrical appliances.
“Any use of subsidized electricity intended for households, industrial, agricultural and commercial subscribers for cryptocurrency mining is prohibited,” the ministry said.
Last May, Iran banned mining for almost four months due to power shortages.
