The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has sued Meta Platforms and Meta Platforms Ireland over the publication of fraudulent advertisements featuring prominent Australian public figures.
The ads included posts with businessman Dick Smith, TV host David Koch and former New South Wales Prime Minister Mike Baird.
The ads contained links that directed users to fake media articles quoting public figures in support of cryptocurrencies. Users were then invited to register on the site, after which they were contacted by the scammers.
“The essence of our case is that Meta is responsible for the ads it publishes on its platform,” the regulator said.
