The Central African Republic (CAR) has officially accepted bitcoin as legal tender, making it the second country in the world to do so after El Salvador, according to the presidential office.
President Fosten Arcange Touadera signed a law that makes bitcoin legal tender along with the franc (CFA) and legalizes the use of cryptocurrencies.
“The Central African Republic is the first country in Africa to accept bitcoin as legal tender. This move puts the Central African Republic on the map of the bravest and most visionary countries in the world,” said Obed Namsio, the president’s chief of staff.
