European Union Financial Services Commissioner Mairead McGuinness called for a new global agreement on cryptocurrency to protect investors and limit the environmental impact of bitcoin mining.
McGuinness also warned of the risks associated with sanctions evasion that could arise from the lack of regulation.
The EU is in the final stages of passing new laws to regulate cryptocurrencies, including the Crypto Asset Markets Regulation (MiCA).
