Icelandic Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir said recent farmer protests in Europe and trade disruptions meant the country needed to reduce its dependence on imports.

Against this backdrop, Iceland plans to divert renewable electricity from data centers for mining to housing and other industries.

“Bitcoin is a problem around the world. Data centers in Iceland use a significant portion of our green energy. The new wind energy proposal will prioritize green industries to achieve carbon neutrality. Bitcoin and cryptocurrency are not part of this mission,” she said.
