Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announced work on a new platform called “Web5,” which is a combination of Web3 and Web2 built on bitcoin blockchain.
The concept of Web5 was presented by Block’s business unit, TBD.
The platform promises to fix the problem of protecting users’ personal data.
“We are struggling to protect personal data with hundreds of accounts and passwords that we can’t remember. Online today, identity and personal data have become the property of third parties,” the company’s website says.
According to TBD, the new platform will provide decentralized identification and data storage for applications.
“This solution will allow developers to focus on creating a delightful user experience by giving back ownership of data and identity to individuals,” the company said.
Decentralization will be enabled through Decentralized Identifiers, Verifiable Credentials and Decentralized Web Nodes, the developers said.
Dorsey previously argued that Web3 is not decentralized and that user data is managed by venture capital funds and corporations.
