Local police searched the Bulgarian offices of cryptocurrency lender Nexo. An investigation has begun against the company on suspicion of money laundering and tax violations.
According to a Nexo spokesman, police are investigating the Bulgarian organization, which does not work with customers but performs operational functions like payroll and customer support.
“The allegations are absurd – we are one of the most stringent organizations with respect to KYC/AML,” said Nexo co-founder and managing partner Antoni Trenchev.
More than 300 police officers, prosecutors and national security agents are involved in the operation, according to Bloomberg, citing a spokeswoman for Bulgaria’s chief prosecutor, Siyka Mileva.
Nexo is now negotiating a buyout of rival Vauld.
Vauld rejected Nexo’s latest offer because it is unsure of the company’s solvency.
