One of the largest mining companies, Riot Blockchain (RIOT), said it has begun developing a large-scale project to expand its capacity to 1 gigawatt (GW) in Navarro County, Texas.
The initial capacity of 400 megawatts (MW) will be developed with immersion-cooled computers on 265 acres of land, and mining and hosting operations will begin in July 2023.
Riot estimates the total cost of the first phase of the expansion will be about $333 million, to be invested during the remainder of 2022, 2023 and the first quarter of 2024.
Once the first phase of 400 MW capacity is completed, it will be increased by an additional 600 MW to 1 GW.
“Once the expansion is complete, Riot’s installed capacity will be 1.7 GW, making it one of the largest bitcoin mining companies in the world,” said Riot CEO Jason Les.
