Russia plans to conduct a pilot launch of the digital ruble as early as 2023.
Elvira Nabiullina, chairman of the Central Bank of Russia, said that the digital ruble is already being tested and that the bank is preparing for real operations with the digital ruble.
“We created a prototype quite quickly… now conducting tests with banks and next year we will gradually have pilot transactions,” Nabiullina said.
Nabiullina also said that Russia is seeking to expand the pool of countries that accept payment cards based on the MIR system, since Visa and Mastercard stopped working in the country after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
