The U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has filed documents in court seeking permission to enforce a court order against cryptocurrency exchange Kraken and its subsidiaries.
The regulator filed the motion with the court minutes after Kraken announced it would settle the dispute with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
The IRS said it first issued a subpoena to the exchange in 2021, but Kraken failed to comply.
“The company failed to provide the books, records, documents and other data required in the subpoena. The IRS is investigating to determine the identity and correct federal income tax liability of U.S. persons who conducted cryptocurrency transactions for 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020,” the regulator said.
Kraken, however, said it had not received a statement and was unaware of the subpoena.
