The Wikimedia Foundation (WMF), which runs the online encyclopedia Wikipedia, will no longer accept cryptocurrency donations.
The decision followed a vote that ended on April 12. More than 70% of the community voted to “stop directly accepting cryptocurrency as a means of donation.”
The decision was due to concerns about the environmental sustainability of the process of accepting cryptocurrency donations as well as the risk of investing in digital assets.
The Wikimedia community consists of editors and other contributors to the free encyclopedia, who also participate in the management of the fund.
WMF began accepting cryptocurrency donations in 2014.
For 2021, the company raised $130,000 in cryptodonates, representing 0.08% of total donations.
