The number of confiscated devices used to mine Bitcoin exactly matches that of the missing hardware that was stolen in three separate burglaries in Icelandic data centres in December and January. The stolen devices are worth around $2 mln. Icelandic police has been monitoring the energy consumption in the country for abnormal increases, but without success. However, a pattern of highly irregular electricity usage in Chinese town Tianjin has attracted the attention of local police, which led to confiscation of mining hardware. Reportedly, Chinese police has not responded to Icelandic enquiry yet.
