According to a report by crypto-analytics company Chainalysis, nearly three-quarters of the revenues from ransomware attacks in 2021 ($400 million) went to wallets that are “highly likely” to be linked to Russia.
In 2019-2021, up to 48% of all cryptocurrency that was sent to addresses belonging to companies housed in Moscow City came from “illegal and dangerous” addresses.
Among the recipients were OTC broker Suex – against which the U.S. imposed sanctions; Eggchange – whose co-founder was arrested by Russian authorities in November; and the peer-to-peer exchange Bitzlato.
Chainalysis notes that all three companies are linked to the laundering of illegally obtained money.
The report also reports that some of the companies received small amounts of laundered cryptocurrencies due to lack of awareness rather than for the purpose of criminal activity.
