India’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-in), which is under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, on Thursday issued a new directive requiring crypto exchanges, virtual private network (VPN) providers and data centers to store a wide range of user data for up to five years.
Under the recently issued directive, crypto exchanges operating in India will be required to store customer names, their ownership structure, contact information and various other data.
Crypto exchanges and VPN service providers are required to report any cyber incident within six hours of its occurrence, and share the collected data with authorities on demand.
The new guidelines will go into effect on June 22, which could force many privacy-focused VPN service providers and crypto platforms that do not collect or store critical user data to cease operations.
